The Birthday Party

October 14-16, 2016 (Fri-Sun) )Stanley Webber lives in a dingy seaside boarding house run by Meg and Petey Boles. Two sinister strangers, Goldberg and McCann, arrive on Stanley’s birthday and turn his innocent-seeming birthday party into a nightmare. The play’s 1958 London premiere was met with bewildered audiences and scathing reviews, but a rave review that appeared eight days after it closed rescued its reputation. In the end, Pinter’s absurdist masterpiece has endured to become one of the classics of the modern stage.

Director: David Girard returns to Theater Voices, where he directed Hothouse and A Steady Rain and performed last season in Outside Mullingar and Art. An Associate Artistic Director for Saratoga Shakespeare Company, where he frequently acts and directs, he will helm this summer’s Romeo & Juliet. He’s worked in a variety of capacities at Capital Rep, most recently as Assistant Director and performer in The Blue-Sky Boys. Recent directing credits: Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (Philly Fringe); Macbeth (Saratoga Shakespeare); Marcus (Temple Theaters); Cloud 9 (Temple Theaters), An Empty Sack (Philadelphia Young Playwrights), Waiting for Lefty (Union College). David has an MFA in Directing from Temple University, and teaches at Union and Siena Colleges.
